ERP Trends for 2020

What are some of the most commonly discussed ERP trends for 2020? Over the years, we’ve seen ERP software evolve to adapt to ever-changing business needs, customer demands, and enterprise technology innovations – such as cloud, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Today, we may be seeing a totally different kind of ERP than what was available twenty or thirty years ago. As 2019 comes to a close, the editors here at Solutions Review are looking ahead. In this light, we’ve provided some of the most commonly discussed ERP trends for 2020.

ERP Trends for 2020

The Internet of Things (IoT)

The IoT is defined as the interconnection of data from devices that normally would remain disconnected from the Internet. Companies can gain valuable insights into how the ERP system performs with the IoT, like how and where the system is used. IoT technology can improve accuracy and expand data availability, which gives rise to intelligent and much more flexible ERP systems as well.

What’s more, blending IoT data with ERP systems can add valuable information to the bigger picture within an enterprise, for instance with the IoT, product shipments can be tagged with devices that report transportation time and current location information. As a result, manufacturers can use this information to better plan production schedules and plant locations.

Cloud solutions are increasingly gaining the attention of business leaders and quickly replacing legacy, on-premise solutions. In 2017, global cloud computing revenue topped $250 billion, and according to Gartner, by 2020, 80 percent of CTOs in leading organizations will facilitate the identification and analysis of emerging technologies to support their companies’ digital transformations.

A cloud-based ERP system – which is offered to businesses via a subscription model by cloud vendors, is a great cost-effective alternative to on-premise systems (no hardware to purchase, etc.) On a cloud server, the capabilities of ERP software are easily accessible from any device that connects to the Internet, making it easier to maintain because there is no on-premise upkeep required. In today’s digital environment where business teams and employees can collaborate on important documents, spreadsheets, etc. and enter important data from remote locations – ERP software is most efficient when it’s utilized via the cloud.

Artificial Intelligence

AI-enabled ERP (iERP) systems can create an environment where a company’s data is conversational and actionable. Not only that, but these intelligent ERP systems can learn from the data sources, create workflows, and reduce the time it takes to load data and reduce errors in the inserted data. Since AI technology learns the different ways in which an organization and individual users interact with the ERP software on a daily basis, AI-enabled ERP systems can suggest different ways to optimize the system for individual users.

Mobile ERP applications allow companies to benefit from improved quality of service, deeper business relationships and more accurate data capture – not to mention access to important data from any location at any time. For instance, an employee from the sales department can check inventory levels or even close a sale from home or while on the road traveling. This convenience of accessing ERP data from your phone, laptop, tablet, etc allows for employee productivity to increase while giving them the tools and information they need to conduct business.

Mobile ERP applications can improve the efficiency of separate business processes too. For instance, a manufacturing business may often run into risks of production delay because of delivery issues. Mobile ERP can dramatically shorten such risks by sending notifications about delivery troubles. In turn, employees will be quickly informed in order to search for the best solution to avoid losses of time and money.

This can increase your customer relationship strategy as well. Employees can easily communicate with customers at any time and place, so if there happens to be an issue with shipping/delivery, employees can contact customers about it letting them know they’re working on it and to be aware delivery may be late. Keeping customers informed goes a long way, believe it or not.

Top ERP trends and security challenges for the new year

As we enter the new year, the criticality of securing sensitive data will continue to mold and transform the structure of security strategies across enterprises, resulting in a heightened focus on access control and data-centric investments. With numerous data privacy regulations on the horizon, the cost of data breaches will be more catastrophic for businesses. In 2020, enterprises must invest in proactive strategies that combat the dynamic threats targeting an organization’s most sensitive data.

Enterprises can expect the trend of increased data breaches in ERP (Enterprise resource planning) systems to continue to rise in 2020

Since ERP was first designed as an application product, ERP systems cannot evolve alongside an organization’s evolving IT environment and are unable to integrate with advanced security initiatives. It is and will remain very challenging to keep ERP systems up-to-date and due to the business criticality of these applications, enterprises are wary of switching them out entirely. In order to secure ERP systems in 2020, business owners must realize the criticality of their businesses’ usability of ERP apps. It is the business owner who is more familiar with the users, and as Gartner concluded, it is the user — not the provider — who fails to manage the controls used to protect an organization’s data. With the growing number of connected applications running across the company, such as payment and HR apps, business owners need to evolve their ERP systems and go beyond firewalls.

In 2020, there will be a shift of CIO’s from systems technology experts to data-centric experts as security increasingly becomes more of a data level issue

As enterprises become more and more aware that the security of sensitive ERP data is a high priority especially with the rise in data privacy regulations such as CCPA, there will be a rise in CDO roles as well as a shift in the roles of CIO’s from the focus on systems to a focus on data. This shift will cause many challenges though, as the majority of CIO’s do not specialize in the systems aspect of ERP. Yet, the rise in data-centric compliance initiatives, as well as the deployment of fundamental security tools such as multi-factor authentication and SSO within the enterprise, will ease the transition from a systems-centric CIO to a data-centric CIO. Additionally, from an organizational perspective, we can expect more CIO and CISOs at the board level as organizations continue to mature and invest further in the security and understand the varying operational budgets.

In the coming year, we can expect more enterprises adopting Privileged access management (PAM) as a key IT security project as well as effective access controls due to heightened third-party risk

PAM is the first, fundamental level of data protection, privacy, and compliance when logging and auditing are concerned, and with more and more data privacy regulations on the horizon, PAM will become a key IT security project in the coming year. Additionally, given that the majority (83 percent) of organizations engaging with third parties to provide business services identified risks, organizations must hold all third parties at greater liability and bound them by their contracts as to data protocols if breached in 2020.

Users will increasingly demand ERP access beyond their corporate networks

As organizations continue to ask more of their employees, employees will insist that their ERP transactions are available from any location, at any time. In order to maintain high levels of security, ERP transactions have traditionally been available (only) behind corporate firewalls. However, this model immediately causes user push-back, especially as more organizations rely on mobile workforces to scale and keep business running in the coming years. When enterprises insist that employees only execute their ERP transactions when they have access to a corporate network, users will inevitably avoid it which will cause increased strain on an organization across functions. Therefore, in 2020, we can expect more organizations to invest in solutions that focus on enhancing access controls and logging. More and more organizations will begin to understand the importance of expanding access as a table stakes initiative as productivity requirements shift, demanding users to be as mobile as possible.

One highlight in Epicor 10.2.400 is the completely new design of scheduling boards. It enables you to easily detect overload problems and hanging conditions. You then can analyze schedule changes concerning cost and throughput before firmly committing them.

So what are the specific Epicor 10.2.400 major features in these scheduling boards:

  • You can drag, drop or drilldown the schedule for multi-level assemblies and operation details.
  • The new timeline enables you to observe short-run operations, based on which you can analyze the long-run impacts of operations.
  • The view indicators, including late status and material availability, proactively send you notifications of potential problems in the schedule. Moreover, you can customize colors for your personal denotation. For example, you can categorize real, possible or delinquent load by task or operation.
  • You can flexible schedule and adjust the schedule for a single task and for the whole plant. In addition, you can lock tasks for key operations or define your priority and level capacity loads by resource/resource group.
  • In case of overload or needs of overload alleviation concerning resource/resource group, you can simply drag and drop load hours forward or backward.
  • These boards allow you to display each date and resource/resource group and access resource/resource-group as well as job scheduling information. As a result, you can check the causes of the problem and adjust the schedules.
  • The what-if (or potential/possible) mode also helps to analyze potential bottlenecks before you finish the actual schedule.

However, in case of preference of  the Classic Scheduling Board, you can easily find that option in the Menu. It is the button ‘Classic’.

Mobile application for time and expense

Some Epicor 10.2.400 major features include new time & expense mobile application. On the one hand, this function target at Requestors, whose job is to compose and send timesheet or expense reports for approval. On the other hand, its objective is to help Approvers to approve or reject timesheet or expense reports more easily.

Furthermore, this application is compatible with Apple iOS 11, 12 devices and Google Android 7.0, 8.0 ones.

REST v2 OData v4

The current upgrade in REST API is another Epicor 10.2.400 highlight. Its present version 2 takes advantage of the newest OData v.4. Thus, the way to specify the current Company as well as custom ERP-specific parameters in REST request URLs becomes friendlier. However, you need to review the changes properly when upgrading to version 2.

Here are the Maintenance Screens in Epicor 10.2.400:

IT Management

Epicor ITSM

Epicor ITSM Incident Management

When an incident occurs, the goal of the service desk is to restore normal operation as quickly as possible. At the service desk, all incoming incidents are registered in Epicor TSM and prioritized and incidents that require a specialist can be immediately escalated to the correct people. Incidents received by e-mail or the Web are registered automatically. Service desk customers can monitor their incident progress via e-mail or online. A knowledge base system allows service desks to build up a searchable set of knowledge and re-use that knowledge—allowing less experienced technicians to answer difficult questions that have been answered before.

Epicor ITSM Change Management

Epicor ITSM helps organizations make changes to the IT infrastructure in a controlled way. Whether the change is required to solve a problem or it is the integration of a new system into your existing IT infrastructure, Epicor ITSM provides a method for requesting the appropriate change, ensuring it receives appropriate approvals and also tracks how long it takes to implement the change. ITSM provides your employees (including Change Approval Board members) with goal-oriented options for implementing a change in a controlled fashion.

Epicor ITSM Configuration Management

With Epicor ITSM you can get detailed insight into your IT infrastructure assets. You can easily track your hardware, software and other IT infrastructure components within ITSM. Thanks to the total overview of information, your service desk can operate effectively and efficiently, saving time for the service desk and money for the organization.

Epicor ITSM also offers you the opportunity to record financial data associated with configurations and products. Purchase value, depreciation term, value after depreciation, warranty date and installation date are captured and tracked. In addition, it’s possible to allocate costs to budget holders, departments, sister companies etc. In short, ITSM makes IT costs transparent.

Epicor ITSM Problem Management

A structural problem leads to incidents and therefore to new or repeating calls. Epicor ITSM will not allow incidents to be solved without their underlying cause being eliminated. ITSM allows you to link several incidents to a problem, and once the problem has been solved and closed; all related incidents can be automatically closed.

Epicor ITSM Service Level Management

The level of service provision can be measured by recording service agreements and costs in ITSM. This allows you to offer precisely the correct level of service. It’s possible to record Service Level Agreements (SLA) per configuration or per contact (end user or department). When an incident or problem is accepted, the applicable SLA can be consulted. The response times included in the SLA are used to monitor the queuing and lead times for you.

Comprehensive IT Service Management Solution

Aside from providing suites for those five services area, Epicor ITSM provides a self-service portal using Microsoft SharePoint technologies, business intelligence using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services technology and IT Operations Management (ITOM) with integration to Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer. The entire solution is built using Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft .NET Framework.
